Fire Engineering Glossary

Technical terms spanning standards, manufacturers, commissioning, networking, testing and fault finding.

Technical guidance only. Confirm current project requirements against the applicable standards, legislation, system documentation and site-specific fire strategy.

Power & batteries

Battery charger fault

A panel indication that the charging circuit or the batteries are outside limits — aged batteries, poor connections or a failed charger stage.

Check battery date codes and terminal voltage under load before condemning the charger.

Standards & law

Competent person

A person with the training, experience and knowledge to carry out the task safely and correctly — the basis on which standards allocate design, installation and maintenance duties.

Fire detection

Double knock

Cause-and-effect logic requiring a second confirming trigger (same or second device) before a critical output such as plant shutdown or release operates.

Signalling

Dual-path signalling

Alarm transmission over two independent paths (e.g. IP plus radio) so a single path failure does not silence the site; both paths need testing.

Emergency lighting

Duration test

A full rated-duration discharge of emergency lighting with every luminaire inspected at the end of the period, when failing batteries drop out.

Schedule so the building can tolerate discharged batteries during the recharge that follows.

Emergency lighting

Escape route lighting

Emergency lighting arranged to illuminate escape routes and exits so occupants can leave safely on supply failure.

Security

Fail-safe / fail-secure locking

Whether an electrically controlled lock releases (fail-safe) or stays locked (fail-secure) on power loss — chosen per door from escape and security requirements.

Escape routes generally demand fail-safe behaviour; confirm against the fire strategy.

Smoke control

Fail-safe state

The position equipment adopts on power or signal loss — open or closed varies by design strategy, so confirm the intended state before judging behaviour a fault.

Emergency lighting

Functional test

A brief regular test proving each emergency luminaire operates on supply failure — proves function, not duration.

Emergency lighting

Maintained luminaire

An emergency luminaire that is lit in normal use and remains lit on mains failure.

Emergency lighting

Non-maintained luminaire

An emergency luminaire that lights only when the normal supply fails.

Fire detection

Phased evacuation

An evacuation strategy where areas evacuate in stages rather than simultaneously, driven by the cause-and-effect programme and voice alarm or staged signals.

Standards & law

Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005

The primary fire safety legislation for most non-domestic premises in England and Wales, placing duties on the responsible person including maintenance of fire safety systems.

Legislation — a legal duty, distinct from the recommendations of a code of practice.

Standards & law

Responsible person

The duty holder for fire safety in a premises under UK fire safety legislation, responsible for ensuring the system is maintained and impairments are managed.

Smoke control

Smoke damper

A powered damper in ductwork controlled to restrict smoke movement; the test is trigger → movement → position feedback, not just a status LED.

Power & batteries

Standby battery calculation

Sizing batteries from standby current × standby duration plus alarm current × alarm duration, with the required safety margin, rounded up to a standard battery size.

Security

Video management system (VMS)

The software managing CCTV recording, display and analytics; the place to verify retention, analytics behaviour and failure alerts.
