Incognito Fire & Security Professional is a reference and diagnostic support tool. It provides information to assist competent engineers — it is not a substitute for professional training, certification, or judgement, and it is not a regulated engineering service.
The Service provides access to an AI assistant, a fault code database, and manufacturer resource links. These are tools to help a qualified engineer work more efficiently. They do not replace the engineer’s own competence, the manufacturer’s official documentation, applicable British and European Standards, or the site-specific risk assessment and cause-and-effect matrix.
2. Who This Service Is For
This platform is designed exclusively for:
- qualified fire alarm and security engineers;
- persons holding relevant industry certifications (FIA, BAFE, NSI, SSAIB, or equivalent); and
- persons who are competent to work on fire detection and alarm systems under BS 5839-1, BS 7273, and all applicable standards.
If you are not a competent person in the fire and security industry, you should not act on any information provided by this platform.
3. AI-Generated Content
The AI assistant uses machine learning to provide diagnostic guidance. You must understand and accept that:
- AI responses may be inaccurate, incomplete, or outdated;
- AI responses have not been reviewed by a qualified engineer;
- AI responses must always be verified against:
- current manufacturer installation and maintenance documentation for the exact panel model and firmware version;
- applicable British Standards and European Norms (BS 5839-1:2017+A1:2020, EN 54 series, and subsequent amendments);
- site-specific risk assessments and method statements; and
- your employer’s standard operating procedures.

4. Authority Hierarchy
When diagnosing or resolving a fault on any fire detection or alarm system, information must be evaluated in this order of authority — highest first:
- The manufacturer’s installation and maintenance manual for the exact panel model and firmware version
- BS 5839-1 (and subsequent amendments), EN 54 series, and other applicable standards
- The site-specific cause-and-effect matrix and risk assessment
- The engineer’s own professional judgement and training
- This platform (reference and guidance only — lowest authority)
If there is any conflict between information provided by this Service and the manufacturer’s documentation or applicable standards, the manufacturer’s documentation and standards always take precedence.
5. Fault Database
The fault code database has been compiled from manufacturer documentation, industry sources, and engineering experience. You must understand that:
- records marked “Provisional” have not been independently verified against manufacturer documentation and are unconfirmed starting points only;
- all records should be cross-checked against the current manufacturer documentation before use on site;
- manufacturer documentation is updated periodically — always confirm you are working from the current version; and
- fault code interpretations may vary between panel firmware versions — always confirm the exact panel model and software version before acting on fault database information.
6. Your Responsibility as an Engineer
The engineer and their employer remain solely and fully responsible for:
- all work carried out on fire detection and alarm systems;
- compliance with BS 5839-1 and all applicable standards and regulations;
- ensuring systems are left in a safe and fully functional state following all work;
- appropriate notification to the alarm receiving centre (ARC)/monitoring station before and after testing;
- notification to the building owner or responsible person of any outstanding faults, impairments, or deficiencies;
- accurate completion of fire log books, service records, and all required maintenance documentation; and
- compliance with all health and safety obligations, including working at height and lone working policies.
7. High-Risk Systems
Special care and independent verification are required before carrying out any work on systems that interface with high-risk functions, including but not limited to:
- fire suppression systems (gaseous, water mist, or sprinkler pre-action interfaces);
- smoke control systems and automatic opening ventilation (AOV);
- evacuation alarm systems (voice alarm, BS 7827, BS 8629);
- refuge and two-way communication systems;
- lift recall and firefighters’ lift systems;
- plant shutdown and process interlock systems;
- electromagnetic door release and hold-open devices;
- direct-line monitored and Category M systems; and
- any interface where system activation could cause injury or significant property damage.
For all high-risk systems: obtain and follow the site-specific cause-and-effect matrix; confirm all interface details with the system integrator or specialist contractor; and do not rely solely on this platform for guidance.
8. Monitoring Station Notification
Before carrying out any testing that may generate fire alarm signals or fault conditions on a monitored system:
- Contact the alarm receiving centre (ARC) or monitoring station directly.
- Place the system “on test” with the ARC before beginning testing.
- Return the system “off test” after all testing is complete.
- Confirm the “off test” status with the ARC before leaving site.
Failure to follow this procedure may result in unnecessary emergency service attendance with associated costs and regulatory consequences.
9. Emergency Situations
This platform is NOT an emergency service and must not be relied upon in live emergency situations.
For live system failures, uncontrolled alarm activations, or situations requiring immediate action:
- Contact the monitoring station (ARC) immediately
- Contact the building owner or responsible person
- Contact your supervisor or your employer’s emergency escalation contact
- Follow your employer’s emergency procedures
- If there is risk to life, contact the emergency services (999)
Do not rely solely on this platform for emergency guidance.
10. Standards Referenced
This platform references the following standards (among others). Standards are updated periodically — always confirm you are using the current version before relying on any reference:
- BS 5839-1:2017+A1:2020 — Fire detection and alarm systems for buildings: Code of practice for design, installation, commissioning and maintenance of systems in non-domestic premises (and subsequent amendments).
- BS 7273 series — Code of practice for the actuation of fire protection systems.
- EN 54 series — Fire detection and fire alarm systems: components and requirements.
