Detector Guards and Physical Protection of Fire Alarm Devices
Fire alarm devices are usually left exposed on ceilings and walls, and most of the time that is fine. But in a sports hall, a warehouse with moving plant, a secure area or a rough industrial space, an unprotected detector or call point will not last. Physical protection keeps devices working where they would otherwise be damaged — provided it protects without stopping the device doing its job. When protection is needed
Devices need physical protection where they are exposed to accidental damage, impact, sport, vandalism or harsh conditions — sports halls, warehouses with moving plant and vehicles, some public and secure areas, and industrial spaces. In these settings guards, cages or robust device choices keep the device functional where an unprotected one would be knocked, contaminated or deliberately interfered with. Whether protection is needed, and of what kind, follows the fire risk assessment and the actual conditions, applied within BS 5839-1 rather than fitted everywhere by default.
Protection without impairing function
The essential constraint is that a guard must protect the device without unacceptably impairing its function. A smoke detector still needs smoke to reach it; a sounder still needs to be heard; a visual alarm device still needs to be seen. So guards are chosen to suit the specific device and the risk, and must not defeat detection, audibility or visibility. Using protection that is appropriate for the device, per the manufacturer's guidance and BS 5839-1, is what balances keeping the device intact against keeping it effective.
Call points and sounders
Protection is not only for detectors. Manual call points may be fitted with protective covers to reduce accidental or malicious operation in areas prone to it, and sounders or other devices may be guarded where impact is likely. The same rule applies: the protection must not stop the device doing its job — a call point must remain readily operable in an emergency, and a covered call point must still be usable. Servicing protected devices
Over time, protection gets damaged, removed, or made inadequate by a change of use. Confirm guards and covers are present where needed, secure, and not impairing the device, and that changes to how a space is used have not created a new need for protection or left existing protection insufficient. From field experience, damaged or missing guards and guards that obstruct the device are the recurring findings, along with new activities that expose previously safe devices. Record the protection provided and any device found damaged or exposed.
