Manual Call Points
The manual call point is the simplest device on a fire alarm system and one of the most important: it is how a person who discovers a fire raises the alarm for everyone else. Getting call points sited correctly, protected sensibly against misuse, and tested properly is basic but essential work. This guide covers all three, and is clear that the specific positions and travel distances belong to the current standard and the system design.
Call points are also a frequent source of false alarms through accidental or malicious operation, so understanding how to protect them without hindering genuine use is part of the job.

What a manual call point does
A manual call point (MCP) lets a person raise the fire alarm by hand. Operating it — pressing a resettable element or, on older units, breaking a glass — signals the control panel, which then raises the alarm according to the cause and effect. Because it depends on a person choosing to operate it, its value lies entirely in being where people will be as they escape, and in being obvious and easy to use.
Siting on escape routes
The guiding principle is that anyone discovering a fire should be able to raise the alarm on their way out without a long detour. BS 5839-1 therefore recommends siting call points on escape routes, particularly at the exits from each storey and at final exits to open air, mounted at a consistent, accessible height. The aim is that no one has to travel an excessive distance to reach one. The specific travel distances and mounting height are set out in the current standard and applied by the designer — take them from there, not from memory.
Protecting against false operation
In some environments — schools, public buildings, licensed premises — accidental or malicious operation of call points is a recurring cause of unwanted alarms. Protective covers, typically a hinged transparent flap fitted over the call point, make deliberate operation a conscious two-step action, and some include a local sounder to deter misuse. The key limitation is that any protection must never impede genuine emergency use: a person in a real fire must still be able to operate the call point immediately. Whether covers are appropriate is a risk decision recorded in the fire strategy.
Testing manual call points
Manual call points are proven by operating them and confirming the panel responds correctly. Modern resettable units are operated with a firm press and reset with a test key, avoiding broken glass and keeping testing clean. In routine weekly testing a different call point is typically operated each week, so that over a period all call points are proven, and each is checked during periodic servicing. Record which call point was tested and the result in the log book. Common issues found on test include painted-over or obstructed units, call points hidden behind furniture or signage, and units damaged by knocks.
Common issues on site
From field experience, recurring problems are call points obstructed by later fit-out, missing protective covers in high-risk areas, units that have been operated and not properly reset, and inconsistent mounting heights after alterations. Noting and flagging these during service keeps the system both compliant and less prone to false alarms.
