Fire Alarm Systems for Prisons and Secure Environments
Prisons and other secure environments turn fire detection into a problem of safety and security at the same time. The fire risk is real — deliberately set fires are a known issue — yet the people at risk cannot simply walk out, and every device has to survive an environment where it may be deliberately attacked. Why secure environments are different
Secure facilities combine a genuine fire risk with requirements no ordinary building has: devices must resist tampering and misuse, occupants cannot evacuate themselves, and response is tightly controlled by staff. Deliberate fires are a recognised hazard, which raises both the likelihood and the need for a robust, controlled response. As a result, the detection, the equipment and the response strategy are all shaped by security as much as by fire safety, following the fire strategy and BS 5839-1 within the constraints of the secure regime.
Robust and anti-tamper equipment
Equipment in cells and secure areas has to be robust and resistant to tampering, ligature and deliberate misuse, specified and mounted accordingly. Detectors, sounders and call points must survive an environment where they may be attacked, so durability and security features sit alongside fire performance in the selection. This is a defining difference from ordinary commercial fire alarm equipment, and getting it wrong means devices that fail or are defeated exactly where reliability matters most.
Staff-controlled response
Because occupants cannot evacuate themselves, response in a secure environment depends on staff and a controlled, managed strategy — frequently staged, with staff acting on detection to manage the situation and effect any movement of occupants. The fire alarm cause and effect and the facility's operational procedures are therefore tightly linked, and the interface between the system and the staff response is critical. The engineer's role is to ensure the system delivers exactly the controlled response the strategy and regime require.
Servicing under security constraints
Servicing a secure facility means working within tight security and access constraints. Confirm the cause and effect delivers the intended staff-controlled response, that anti-tamper and robust devices are intact and functioning, and that the system still matches a facility whose use and population change. Testing and access are constrained and must be coordinated closely with the facility. From field experience, damaged or defeated devices and response arrangements that have drifted from the current regime are the recurring findings.
