Engineers who move between commercial and residential work quickly hit a language change: the familiar L and P categories of BS 5839-1 give way to a scheme of Grades and LD/PD categories under BS 5839-6. It describes the same broad idea — what the system is for and how much it covers — but adds a second axis for the type of system, because domestic detection ranges from a single self-contained alarm to a full panel-based installation. The idea to hold onto: in domestic work you describe a system with two labels — a Grade (the type and robustness of the system) and a Category (LD for life or PD for property, with a number for coverage).
