Fire Alarm Maintenance Checklist

This checklist gives engineers a structured approach to routine fire alarm maintenance. It is not a substitute for the current standard, manufacturer instructions or the maintenance contract, but it helps keep visits consistent.

Before arriving on site

  • Review previous service reports and outstanding defects.
  • Confirm panel make, model and site access requirements.
  • Check whether the system is monitored by an ARC.
  • Confirm whether any high-risk interfaces are present, such as suppression, smoke control, lifts or door release.

On arrival

  • Sign in and notify the responsible person.
  • Place monitored signalling on test where required.
  • Check the panel normal condition before testing.
  • Record any pre-existing faults or isolations.

Panel and power checks

  • Review event log history.
  • Check mains supply indication.
  • Inspect batteries for age, condition and secure connections.
  • Check charger status and battery fault indications.
  • Confirm printer, network or repeater faults where fitted.

Device and circuit checks

  • Test devices according to the agreed service scope.
  • Check manual call points, detectors, sounders and interfaces.
  • Inspect exposed wiring, junction boxes and device bases where accessible.
  • Investigate contamination, damage, missing labels or poor device siting.

Close-out

  • Restore all isolations.
  • Confirm the panel returns to normal.
  • Take the ARC off test where applicable.
  • Explain defects and recommendations to the responsible person.
  • Complete the service record with enough detail for the next engineer to understand the site history.
