Fire Alarm Maintenance Checklist
This checklist gives engineers a structured approach to routine fire alarm maintenance. It is not a substitute for the current standard, manufacturer instructions or the maintenance contract, but it helps keep visits consistent.
Before arriving on site
- Review previous service reports and outstanding defects.
- Confirm panel make, model and site access requirements.
- Check whether the system is monitored by an ARC.
- Confirm whether any high-risk interfaces are present, such as suppression, smoke control, lifts or door release.
On arrival
- Sign in and notify the responsible person.
- Place monitored signalling on test where required.
- Check the panel normal condition before testing.
- Record any pre-existing faults or isolations.
Panel and power checks
- Review event log history.
- Check mains supply indication.
- Inspect batteries for age, condition and secure connections.
- Check charger status and battery fault indications.
- Confirm printer, network or repeater faults where fitted.
Device and circuit checks
- Test devices according to the agreed service scope.
- Check manual call points, detectors, sounders and interfaces.
- Inspect exposed wiring, junction boxes and device bases where accessible.
- Investigate contamination, damage, missing labels or poor device siting.
Close-out
- Restore all isolations.
- Confirm the panel returns to normal.
- Take the ARC off test where applicable.
- Explain defects and recommendations to the responsible person.
- Complete the service record with enough detail for the next engineer to understand the site history.
